Islands of Ko Bulon Lae, Ko Tarutao, Ko Lipe, Ko Adang and Ko Rawi Thailand Travel Guide
More gems of the Andaman Sea, the islands of Ko Tarutao National Park and Petra National Park welcome you to wile away endless hours miles away from the most crowded beaches of Phuket.

Ko Bulon Lae
Ko Bulon Lae, a 1.5 to 2 hour ride from Pakbara Pier in Satun, is a small island home to just over 100 local Chao Lea fishermen families in Petra National Park. While the waters of Ko Bulon Lae are not as clear as other islands in the Andaman Sea, many tourists fall in love with the island's low key appeal. Bulon Lae Resort occupies the nicest beach on the island on the northwestern side and is the usual drop off point for arriving boats. The resort itself is the most popular on the island and has become slightly overvalued as a result. If you are looking for snorkeling, the best on the island is just west of Bulon Lae Resort. Pansand Resort is another popular option, roughly the same price as Bulon Lae, but including breakfast. Electricity is provided nightly to light your way past a few cold ones and a platter of fresh fish.

Ko Tarutao
Ko Tarutao Island is one of seven islands located in the Ko Tarutao National Park. Located in the Straits of Malacca, the Thai-Malaysian border marks the southern boundary of the park. The island can be reached in 1:45 from Pakbara Pier. With a land area of 152 square km, Ko Tarutao is a large mountainous island with nice beaches on the western side in Phante Malacca Bay, Chak Bay, and Son Bay. The National Park Office can be found at Phante Malacca Bay and offers camping permits, a restaurant, and a small shop/exhibition center. Crocodile Cave is an interesting trip that takes you past dense mangrove forests and down inland river ways before you reach the above sea level cave.

Ko Lipe
Ko Lipe, locally referred to as "Nipis Island," is 25 km from Ko Tarutao or 1 hour from Pakbara Pier by longtail boat. Also one of seven islands of the Ko Tarutao National Park, the small island is only 10 square km. The island is home to beautiful corals if you are looking for snorkeling or diving. There is one Chao Lea village offering basic necessities, but be sure to bring baht as locals probably will not be able to exchange foreign currency. There are three nice beaches, Pattaya Beach, Sunlight Beach, and Sunset Beach, all within walking distance of each other. In fact, everything on the island is walking distance, but be sure to back a flashlight if you plan on walking back to your bungalow after the sun sets.

Ko Adang
A great getaway for the traveler who has enough of the busy resort islands, Ko Adang is a low key island offering beaches, waterfalls, and jungle treks. Another of the islands in Ko Tarutao National Park, the island is only a short ride from Ko Lipe. The snorkeling is decent and friendly rangers at the island's Information Center are happy to steer you in the right direction. There are two waterfalls on the island, Ratana and Pirate's Fall. Ratana is best reached by longtail, but can dry to a slow trickle in the dry season. Pirate's Fall is accessible along a 2 km pathway anytime of year. The island has some basic accommodation that can be arranged from Pakbara Pier. Be sure to book ahead in the high season as the island can fill up.

Ko Rawi
Also located in the Ko Tarutao National Park, Ko Rawi is easily accessed from either Ko Lipe or Pakbara Pier. The island is home to roughly 500 villagers and has a nice coral reef off the southwest coast. Forty kilometers west of Ko Tarutao, Ko Rawi has beautiful white sand beaches. There are no facilities on the island, but worth a visit by longtail for snorkeling among its coral reefs and a quick trek through the dense foliage.
